Rian Johnson recently spoke to Empire Magazine where he once again addressed the negative reaction to The Last Jedi. “It’s been a process. At the beginning, it was not easy. It was incredibly painful,” Johnson said. He then added that he was especially touchy before the film was released. “Before the movie came out, if one person said something slightly snarky to me on Twitter, I felt a deep, ‘Oh my God, there’s someone out there that doesn’t like me… I have to fix this,’” Johnson said.
Luckily, Rian Johnson was able to get over the anxiety and deal with the backlash. “In the context of social media, and maybe in the context just of being a human being in the world, it’s a very healthy thing to have been put through the fire on,” Johnson said. “You could also make the argument that those nerve-endings that have been seared off is a bad thing.” Star Wars: The Last Jedi or Episode VIII, was released in 2017 and follows Rey as she seeks the aid of Luke Skywalker, in hopes of turning the tide for the Resistance in the fight against Kylo Ren and the First Order. While Rey sets out on her search, General Leia Organa, Finn, and Poe Dameron attempt to escape a First Order attack on the dwindling Resistance fleet. Rian Johnson’s latest project Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will premiere on Netflix on December 23, 2022.
